Vol. 380 No. 7

Written Answers. - RTE Licence Fee.

80.

asked the Minister for Communications the estimated level of evasion of the RTE licence fee in each year since 1980; and the projected level for 1988.

Estimates of the level of television licence evasion differ. The most conservative estimates have put the level of evasion at about 20 per cent in the period referred to by the Deputy. A strong sales performance and the completion of the computerisation of household records by An Post will have reduced the level of evasion in 1987.

I am confident that the continuing concentration of sales effort by An Post and the increased penalties on conviction for possession of an unlicensed or incorrectly licensed television set being provided for in the Broadcasting and Wireless Telegraphy Bill, 1987, when the Bill is enacted, will help to reduce significantly the level of evasion.
