asked the Minister for Finance if he will give for each Department, the total amount of moneys expended each year on printing; the cost of all printing commissioned or supervised by the Stationery Office; the total cost of stationery and printing for the Houses of the Oireachtas; and if he has any plans to make economies in this area.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. The figures relate to 1987.
The total cost of printing commissioned by the Stationery Office from commerical printers in this period was £5,300,000 including services provided on a repayment basis. In addition a substantial amount of urgent and confidential reproduction of forms, reports etc. was undertaken in the inplant unit within the Stationery Office. The cost to the State of this work was of the order of £350,000. The total cost of stationery and printing for the Houses of the Oireachtas was £1.1 million.
The Stationery Office is now part of the Government Supplies Agency within the ambit of the Office of Public Works. It is the policy of the commissioners to review on an ongoing basis all aspects of the operations of the Government Supplies Agency with a view to promoting efficiencies and effecting economies wherever possible and this policy will continue.
