asked the Minister for Justice if he will give a breakdown of the number of subversive prisoners in Portlaoise and Limerick prisons, giving separate figures for female and male prisoners in the case of Limerick, for the years 1983 to 1985, inclusive, in respect of the following age groups (1) under 18 years (2) 18-25 years (3) 25-30 years (4) 30-40 years, and (5) over 40 years for the year 1987.

It has not been possible in the time available to compile the information in the format sought by the Deputy. It is at present being compiled and will be transmitted to the Deputy as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give the percentage breakdown of subversive prisoners serving the following sentences (1) under one year (2) over one year but less than five years (3) over five years but less than ten years (4) over ten years but less than 20 years and (5) over 20 years, separately for Portlaoise and Limerick in 1987.

During 1987 nine prisoners convicted by the Special Criminal Court were serving sentences in Limerick Prison — 33? per cent (three) were serving for from five to ten years, 44½ per cent (four) for from ten to 20 years and the remainder — two prisoners — were serving sentences of life imprisonment. In Portlaoise Prison, 144 offenders were serving sentences imposed by the Special Criminal Court — 12 per cent (18) for from one to five years, 40 per cent (57) for from five to ten years, 33 per cent (48) for from ten to 20 years and 15 per cent (21) for over 20 years (This includes 12 offenders serving sentences of life imprisonment).
