Vol. 380 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Board Travelling Expenses.

69.

asked the Minister for Education the total amount paid in travelling expenses to members of the vocational educational committee and members of school boards in regional technical colleges, community schools/colleges, comprehensive schools and vocational schools in County Donegal in each of the last five years for which figures are available.

The financial accounts of vocational educational committees do not disclose a separate figure of costs in respect of travelling expenses of members. The accounts contain a total figure of cost in respect of travelling and subsistence expenses which, in the case of County Donegal VEC, were as follows: 1983, £14,307; 1984, £21,302; 1985, £27,810; 1986, £19,235; 1987, £19,450. These figures do not include expenses paid to members of the VEC delegated to attend conferences as these expenses are not shown separately in the VEC financial accounts.

The travelling expenses of members of the board of management of Letterkenny Regional College as per its annual statutory accounts are as follows: 1983, £606; 1984, £1,588; 1985, £401; 1986, £3,919; 1987, £3,788. With regard to community schools/colleges and comprehensive schools the information sought by the Deputy is not readily available from my Department's records and it would take an inordinate amount of official time to compile these figures.
