asked the Minister for the Environment if his Department will provide a special allocation to Louth County Council for the provision of traffic lights at the roadway at Collon, County Louth; if his attention has been drawn to the danger to residents in Collon where it is not possible for them to cross the road without endangering their lives.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the serious traffic hazard at Collon village, County Louth on the main Slane-Ardee road; that the policy of Louth County Council members is to provide traffic lights at this dangerous stretch of road and that the Garda in the area share this view; and if he will ensure that this work will be carried out.
I propose to take Questions Nos. 158 and 159 together.
The provision of traffic lights is a matter for the local authority concerned acting at the request of or with the consent of the Garda Commissioner.
Proposals in relation to the provision of traffic lights at Collon have not been received in my Department. However, I understand that Louth County Council propose to carry out a survey to establish if the provision of traffic lights is warranted at the junction of the Drogheda road with the N2 at Collon.
The cost of traffic management measures, such as the provision of traffic lights, normally falls to be met from the block grant for roads allocated annually by my Department.
