asked the Minister for Health the number of AIDS cases and deaths notified to the World Health Organisation for each of the member states for the years 1980 and 1987.
Written Answers. - AIDS Cases and Deaths.
The World Health Organisation have been compiling global statistics on cases of AIDS since 1986, on the basis of notifications by member states. The number of cases of AIDS notified to WHO, in respect of each member state, up to 21 March, 1988 — the latest date for which figures are available — is set out in the following Table.
The disease was identified for the first time in the USA in 1981. The virus was first isolated in 1983. The first attempt at formal notification by Member States of WHO, based on a clinical definition of AIDS, was introduced in 1984. A HIV antibody test became available in early 1985 from which serological testing and monitoring of the virus was introduced. Retrospective data, therefore, other than that in respect of the USA and Western European countries, would be of doubtful value prior to 1984. WHO have, however, been attempting to develop a global picture of AIDS, retrospectively, since 1984 and this shows that, for the year 1980, the total number of AIDS cases notified for that year was 70.
These 70 cases were notified in respect of the following countries:

WHO have ceased to monitor deaths from AIDS as it has now been established that the survival time between diagnosis of the disease and death is not greater than two years. In Ireland, the number of deaths from AIDS is 17 at present.
