Written Answers. - Voluntary Redundancy Scheme.

63.

asked the Minister for Health (a) the number of staff in the Civil Service who have availed of the voluntary redundancy package to date, giving a breakdown for each Department (b) the number of staff in health boards who have availed of the voluntary redundancy package giving a breakdown by medical and administrative grades (c) the number of staff in the voluntary hospitals and other health agencies who have availed of the voluntary redundancy package by medical and administrative grades and (d) if he will give the total administrative cost of the health services administered by the health boards and voluntary bodies, excluding the civil service, for 1988.

The terms of the voluntary redundancy scheme were not applied to staff in my Department. However, fourteen officers have to date availed of the early retirement scheme.

To date in 1988, 347 staff in health boards have availed of the early retirement/voluntary redundancy scheme. Of this number 29 were in clerical/administrative grades and 4 in medical grades.

In voluntary hospitals and other health agencies a total of 161 staff have availed of early retirement/voluntary redundancy to date in 1988. Of this number 40 were in clerical/administrative grades and 3 in medical grades.

In 1987 a total of 578 staff availed of the early retirement/voluntary redundancy scheme in the health services, 33 of whom were in clerical/administrative grades and 5 in medical grades. All 38 posts, except one medical post, were in agencies other than health boards.

The total administrative cost, excluding central administration, is estimated at £52.65 million for 1988, of which £15.65 million is in respect of superannuation costs for all programmes.
