Vol. 382 No. 11

Written Answers. - Portlaoise Prisoner.

53.

asked the Minister for Justice the reason a person (details supplied) who is not a political prisoner is in Portlaoise prison; if he will arrange that this person be transferred elsewhere; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Deputy should be aware that there is no such category as "political prisoner" in our prison system.

The transfer of this offender to the prison where he now is, was necessary because of the operational requirements of the prison system. I am not prepared at this stage to transfer him to another prison.
