Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Intoxicating Liquor in Supermarkets.

90.

asked the Minister for Justice when it is anticipated that the legislation governing the provisions in relation to the sale of intoxicating liquor in supermarkets will be introduced; the consultations that have taken place between representatives of the retail industry and officials of his Department; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Section 47 of the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1988 provides for controls over the sale of intoxicating liquor in supermarkets and other shops which are licensed for the sale of intoxicating liquor. This section will not come into operation until the necessary commencement order is made by the Minister for Justiced. The question of the making of a commencement order is under consideration at present. In this connection, officials of my Department have had meetings with representatives of retail outlets, suppliers and trade associations, to clarify the purpose and scope of section 47 and to hear the views of the trade interests concerned.
