Vol. 383 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Telephone Systems.

89.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that many of the Garda stations in the Dublin metropolitan area have a separate series of telephone numbers for different sections and offices in Garda stations such as inspector, superintendent, sergeant as well as the detective units; if, in the interests of efficiency and facilitating the public who have to telephone the Garda stations, he will request the Garda authorities to ensure that the telephone systems for Garda stations in the Dublin area can be rationalised so as to provide ease of access for the public; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the need to improve the telephone system in Garda stations in the Dublin metropolitan area and this matter is receiving attention from the expert group which is advising me on all aspects of the new Garda communications network. It is hoped to invite tenders in the near future for a new telephone system for the area, which will provide the Garda and the public with a modern, efficient, easy-to-use service.
