I do not propose to implement the proposals made in the Green Paper on Local Structures in Education. Rather, it is my intention to rationalise existing VEC structures. This will involve the amalgamation of a number of VECs which will reduce their number from 38 at present to approximately 20. In the context of the rationalisation, it is also my intention to grant greater autonomy to the regional technical college while retaining them under the aegis of the VECs. This, in my view, is a much more sensible approach than that proposed by the previous administration.
