Vol. 385 No. 4

Written Answers. - Private Schools Funding.

31.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the severe difficulties being faced by public schools at present especially in disadvantaged areas, she will divert some of the substantial sums of money provided by the State to private fee-charging schools to assist these schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

Following an announcement by the then Minister, in connection with the 1986 budget, capitation grants were withdrawn from fee-charging secondary schools with effet from the commencement of the 1986-87 school year.

I have no plans to alter the arrangements whereby teachers are paid salary in the normal way, under the terms of the rules for the payment of incremental salary to secondary teachers.

The teachers in these schools are providing a service for children who would have to be catered for elsewhere. Teachers would still have to be employed and salary paid to them.
