asked the Minister for Education the cost of superintending and correcting leaving certificate, intermediate certificate and matriculation examinations during 1987 and 1988; the amount which was paid to each of the following for the said examinations during 1987 and 1988 (1) superintendents (2) examiners and (3) inspectors; and the amount which was collected in fees from the candidates during the said examinations in 1987 and 1988.

All of the amounts shown above were paid to persons appointed to act as superintendent or examiner at the leaving and intermediate certificate examinations. The work which the inspectors of my Department undertake in connection with these examinations is part of their usual duties and they receive no extra payment for it.

Candidates entry fee receipts in respect of these examinations in 1987 and 1988 were £3.3 million and £3.6 million respectively.

These figures do not include staff salaries, stationery costs, overheads etc. The real cost of running the examination is estimated at £10 million.

My Department have no function in relation to the matriculation examination.
