Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - Inland Waterways Development.

161.

asked the Minister for Finance in any immediate plans are ready for implementing the recommendations of the Brady Shipman report on the development of our inland waterways; the funding which is being made available to implement any of the recommendations in the coming year in so far as they pertain to County Offaly generally; and in particular, the recommendation to carry out dredging and general tidying-up works in the proposed development of Shannon Harbour as set out in the report.

There are no immediate plans for implementing the recommendations for development of the Grand and Royal Canals contained in the Brady Shipman Martin report. The funding allocated to the commissioners of Public Works for the coming year will be sufficient only to allow for a continuation of the programme of essential maintenance work being carried out throughout the system. It is not possible at this stage to say how much of the allocation will be spent on work in County Offaly but it is unlikely that any major work will be carried out at Shannon Harbour.
