Vol. 385 No. 6

Written Answers. - GAA Problems in Northern Ireland.

64.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has satisfied himself that no undue restrictions are being experienced by clubs of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Northern Ireland in the development and promotion of Gaelic games there, as a result of the presence of British army units on or near GAA grounds; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Government have taken a particular interest in all cases where the GAA has experienced problems with the security forces in Northern Ireland. In this regard there has been a particular problem associated with the GAA grounds in Crossmaglen. The Government have used every opportunity to impress upon the British authorities the need to find an early and acceptable solution to the serious difficulties being experienced by the Crossmaglen club. Moreover, the Government have made it clear that they would wish to facilitate in every way possible the proposed development of the club facilities there. This matter will continue to be pursued vigorously through the framework of the Anglo-Irish Conference.
