Vol. 386 No. 5

Written Answers. - Concessionary Staffing Scheme.

67.

Proinsias De Rossa

asked the Minister for Education, in relation to the concessionary staffing scheme for national schools, designated as disadvantaged (1) the number of schools included in the scheme in the light of her reference to 79 schools in a reply to Parliamentary Question No. 5 of 11 February 1988 and to 68 schools in a reply to Parliamentary Question No. 10 of 8 November 1988 (2) the total number of concessionary posts in the schools designated (3) if she will give details of the allocation of these posts by county and (4) the number of the designated schools which have a partner school on the same campus which has not been designated as disadvantaged; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

A total of 79 schools were included in the scheme for providing additional teaching assistance to primary schools in disadvantaged areas in the school year 1987-88. As two of the schools have since amalgamated, the number of schools now in the scheme is 78.

The 68 schools referred to in my reply to Parliamentary Question No. 10 of 8 November 1988 are those schools which are recognised as disadvantaged both for financial aid and for staffing purposes.

A total of 95 concessionary posts are allocated at present. These posts are distributed as follows:

County

No. of posts

Dublin

78

Cork

10

Limerick

4

Mayo

1

Westmeath

1

Waterford

1

There are 11 schools which have concessionary posts in areas where another school on the same campus is not included in the scheme.
