Vol. 387 No. 2

Written Answers. - Social Welfare Package.

32.

asked the Minister for Education if it is her intention to co-operate with the Department of Social Welfare in working out a package aimed to assist needy families, with numbers of school-going children to cope with the exceptionally high demands of fitting their children out for school at the commencement of each school year in September.

I am happy to say that I have been able to make a significant increase this year in the money available to help provide books for necessitous children.

I understand that under the terms of the supplementary welfare allowances scheme discretionary payments may be made by the health boards to families with insufficient means to help meet exceptional needs on a once-off basis.
