Vol. 387 No. 4

Written Answers. - Killycannon (Monaghan) National School.

130.

asked the Minister for Education if she will replace the second teacher at Killycannon national school, Scotstown PO, County Monaghan who has been withdrawn since September 1988, having regard to the fact that (a) there are at present 34 children on the roll, (b) there are two more families moving into the area and by September 1989 the projected number for the school will be 38 and (c) Killycannon school is in a remote area and the nearest school is almost four miles away and is not suitable for young children; if she will take into account the recent reconstruction of the school and the amount of money spent; if her attention has been drawn to the fact that in order that the school be retained in this area it is essential that a second teacher be appointed; that the older children will be taken from the school due to the fact that they are not receiving the proper tuition for secondary school because the present teacher has too many classes to deal with.

The staffing arrangements in the school in question in the current school year have been determined in accordance with the agreement between the Government and the INTO under the Programme for National Recovery.

Under these arrangements the appointment of an assistant teacher in the school is not warranted at present.
