Vol. 387 No. 5

Written Answers. - Dublin Airport Garda Duty.

29.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí appointed to carry out duty at Dublin Airport; the reason this decision has been taken; whether there is a duplication of duty in this area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Garda sub-station at Dublin Airport was established in May 1988 to provide a service to the public who use the airport and to cater for members of the garda Síochána who provide policing and security services there. A total of 36 members of the Garda Síochána, is assigned to the sub-station.

As I have indicated in reply to previous questions on this matter, the establishment of the Garda sub-station has not involved any change in the roles of either the Garda Síochána or the airport security force. There is no question of duplication. The gardaí assigned to the sub-station have overall responsibility for the prevention and detection of crime in the airport area, while the responsibility of the airport security force relates to the enforcement of the airport by-laws.
