Vol. 387 No. 10

Written Answers. - Ennis Cable Television.

38.

asked the Minister for Communications if his attention has been drawn to the extreme frustration being felt by consumers in the Ennis area of County Clare who have been expecting a cable television service for a number of years.

I understand the cable licensee has been ready to begin cabling Ennis since last September, and at that time the area was canvassed for subscribers. However, because of the extensive availability of illegal rebroadcasting signals in the town, the response to the canvass was very poor and furthermore there was an unprecedented number of people unwiling to allow the cable to cross their property. The cable licensee has indicated his readiness to proceed immediately with the installation of the cable system as soon as the illegal rebroadcasting system is closed down. This latter action will be taken by my Department as soon as resources permit.
