Vol. 388 No. 1

Written Answers. - Investigation of Claims.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice whether any action has been taken pursuant to the investigation in March-April 1988 of claims by a person (details supplied) concerning the penetration of the Garda Síochána by the British Intelligence Service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is not the usual practice for Ministers for Justice to make statements to the House about investigations of this kind. However, having regard to the special circumstances of this case and the persistence with which these particular allegations are made, I consider it appropriate, in this instance, to indicate that the claims referred to in the question were the subject of an intensive Garda investigation over a considerable period of time and I am informed by the Garda authorities that no evidence was found to substantiate them.
