asked the Minister for Labour the total number of redundancies notified to his Department during the last six months in (a) agriculture (b) manufacturing and (c) other areas of employment; and if he will give a breakdown on the same redundancies on a regional basis.
Written Answers. - Redundancy Notifications.
The total number of proposed redundancies notified to my Department under the Redundancy Payments Acts, 1967 to 1984 in the six months August 1988 to January 1989 was 9,795. This figure is broken down as follows: (a) Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, 345; (b) Manufacturing, 4,026; (c) Other, 5,424. A more detailed breakdown of this figure is set out in the form of a tabular statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report. It is not possible to break down the notifications on a regional basis according to particular sectors. A breakdown on a regional basis is, however, set out in the form of a second tabular statement which I also propose to circulate in the Official Report.
