Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Preservation of Dublin Church.

80.

asked the Minister for Finance if the future of St. George's Church, Temple Street, Dublin 1, which is one of the finest classical churches in Ireland and is of international architectural importance, merits ministerial attention to preserve its structural integrity both exterior and interior; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I acknowledge the architectural merit of St. George's Church, and in the company of my officials, I have examined same. The Commissioners of Public Works have no requirement for the building and it is not the practice for them in their role under the National Monuments Acts to intervene in respect of buildings which post-date 1700 AD except in very exceptional circumstances. St. George's Church dates to the early 19th century.
