Vol. 388 No. 3

Written Answers. - Lead Free Petrol.

100.

asked the Minister for the Environment the number of motor vehicles (1) at present using lead free petrol (2) capable of being adapted to using lead free petrol and (3) can never use lead free petrol.

In 1986, it was estimated that 30 per cent of cars in use on Irish roads could use unleaded petrol. This proportion is, of course, increasing according as new cars enter the fleet. On the basis of the list produced by the Society of the Irish Motor Industry, it is estimated that over 85 per cent of new petrol driven cars can use unleaded petrol without adjustment.
