Vol. 388 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Holidays Curtailment.

267.

asked the Minister for Education if it is normal practice to deduct time from school holidays to make up for time lost when pupils and teachers are being transferred to new school premises as in the case of the No. 2 national school, Celbridge, County Kildare; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In accordance with normal practice my Department would expect that in the educational interests of pupils the transfer arrangements should be completed as far as possible without disruption of school work. On that account the transfer should normally be scheduled to take place at a week-end or other period of vacation, as might be appropriate. The process would not be expected to take more than a day or two to complete.

In the case of Celbridge No. 2 national school, my Department granted the school two days exceptional closure at the time of the transfer because of the disruption to pupils and teachers due to the arrival of machinery on the premises and electrical rewiring of part of the school.
