Written Answers. - Interception of Telephone/Mail Communications.

asked the Minister for Justice the procedure relating to the interception of telephone communications by the State.

The procedures in relation to the issue of warrants by the Minister for Justice for the monitoring of telephone calls have been outlined in the House on a number of occasions. I would refer the Deputy to the detailed reply given by the then Minister for Justice to a series of questions on 17 February 1972, in the Official Report volume 258, column 2136 to 2145.

asked the Minister for Justice whether any warrants for the interception of telephone communications were in force on 1 January 1989.

It has never been the practice, and it would be contrary to the public interest, to disclose the type of information sought by the Deputy.

asked the Minister for Justice the procedure relating to the interception of mail communications by the State.

The procedures in relation to the issue of warrants by the Minister for Justice for the monitoring of mail have been outlined in the House on a number of occasions. I would refer the Deputy to the detailed reply given by the then Minister for Justice to a question on 4 July 1970 in the Official Report, volume 247, columns 564-566.
