Vol. 390 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Laois Water/Sewerage Schemes.

81.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make funds available to Laois County Council for the purpose of improving Mountmellick sewerage scheme; and when work will commence.

Preliminary proposals for major improvements to the Mountmellick sewerage system were submitted to my Department by Laois County Council and were examined in the light of existing deficiencies in the present system. The council were advised in 1986 to submit revised proposals having regard to further investigations and remedial measures which they were asked to attend to. No such revised proposals have yet been received in my Department.

The council did, however, submit to my Department proposals for interim improvement works to the town's sewerage system for inclusion in the 1989 small schemes programme. Having regard to the funds available and the number of high priority schemes submitted by local authorities, it was not possible to include the Mountmellick proposals in the schemes which were approved for 1989.

82.

asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the urgent need to make adequate funding available to Laois County Council for improvements to Portlaoise water supply; and when it is proposed to proceed with the scheme.

Having regard to the capital available in the current year for the sanitary services programme, it is not possible, at this stage, to indicate when the necessary finance will be made available for this scheme.
