The overall strength of the Garda Síochána on 30 April 1989 was 10,631. It is intended to recruit 1,000 Garda trainees over the three years 1989-1991. The first intake of 87 trainees commenced training on 3 April and the intention is to recruit about the same number every three months throughout the three year period.
