Vol. 394 No. 8

Written Answers. - Foreign Births Register.

Nora Owen

Question:

299 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice when he will introduce the special legislation required to enter into the foreign births register the outstanding applications from great grandchildren whose applications were received by 31 December 1986, in accordance with the Irish Nationality Act, 1986, but due to the large volume of applications could not be registered before 31 December 1986, having regard to the fact that such special legislation is required following the advice of the Attorney General.

I am at present considering a number of changes to the legislation governing Irish citizenship including the change referred to in the question. I expect to be in a position to make proposals for legislative change to the Government in the near future. More precise information about these proposals will be announced in the normal way, when they have been considered and decided upon by the Government.
