105 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Education when it is anticipated that the subject of social and political studies will be available as a second level subject.
For the present I propose to retain the existing syllabus in civics as a compulsory non-examination subject to be followed by all recognised junior pupils. In the context of the review of courses for the new junior certificate programme I have asked the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment to review the provision for civics. This review would encompass elements of civic, social and political education.
