In 1986, forestry functions were the responsibility of the Forestry and Wildlife Division of the then Department of Tourism, Fisheries and Forestry. In 1987 that Department was renamed the Department of the Marine and discarded its tourism and forestry-wildlife functions. The wildlife functions of the Forestry and Wildlife Division went to the Office of Public Works and my Department was given responsibility for the forestry functions. In 1989, the main functions relating to State forestry were transferred from my Department to the newly established State sponsored body, Coillte Teoranta.
These changes resulted in large transfers of staff including the appointment of staff who were providing common services for the various divisions. In the circumstances, it would not be possible to give the breakdown requested in respect of 1986 for the forestry functions left with my Department.
