Vol. 397 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ballinskelligs Castle, County Kerry.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

19 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance if the Government have any plans for the preservation of Ballinskelligs Castle, County Kerry, having regard to the fact that the structure and foundations of the castle were seriously damaged by recent storms.

Ballinskelligs Castle is not in State care and, therefore, the Commissioners of Public Works are not empowered under the National Monuments Acts to incur expenditure on its maintenance or conservation.

The castle which has been much altered and has no unusual features or elements, would not be considered suitable for taking into State care.
