Vol. 397 No. 7

Written Answers. - Schools Criteria.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

103 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Education if, as a result of the denominational nature of our national schools, different class size criteria are used to determine when teachers may be hired or let go in schools under the management of Roman Catholic and Protestant interests; the criteria in each of these denominational categories; the number of Protestant national schools in which teachers are retained who would not be retained if the schools were under Roman Catholic management; and the number, in aggregate, of extra teachers who are retained as a result of the less stringent criteria applicable to the Protestant schools.

The staffing of all national schools is determined by regulations under the rules for national schools as amended from time to time by Department of Education circulars. No distinction is made between schools on denominational grounds for staffing purposes.
