Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - National Roads Authority.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

263 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline the work done to date by the National Roads Authority; the reason the chairman of the Authority is proposing to divest himself of some day-to-day responsibilities, in the light of the amount of work that needs to be done; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 11 of 14 December 1989 regarding the work carried out by the National Roads Authority.

When the Authority was set up on a non-statutory basis, the chairman was appointed on a part-time executive basis. Towards the end of last year the chairman requested that because of pressure of his other work his appointment be altered to a non-executive basis. This alteration took effect from I January 1990.

At the request of the board of the National Roads Authority, an official of my Department is acting as Chief Executive Officer of the Authority with effect from that date pending the enactment of the relevant legislation.
