Vol. 397 No. 9

Written Answers. - Bone Marrow Transplant Unit.

Richard Bruton

Question:

294 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health the present bed complement available to the bone marrow transplant unit in St. James's Hospital; the number of patients awaiting treatment in this unit; the estimated average waiting time for patients before service can be provided; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are three dedicated bone marrow transplant beds in the 27 bed Haematology-Oncology Unit at St. James's Hospital. It is not possible to give an average waiting period for transplants as much depends on the patient's overall condition and whether or not they are in remission. There is a regular assessment of patients whose condition might benefit from a bone marrow transplant to establish their suitability for treatment.
