Written Answers. - Hospital Incinerators.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

85 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if he will make a statement on the procedures in place by his Department to monitor the various hospital incinerators; the frequency of the temperature checks to ensure total combustion; if such temperature controls are regularly calibrated; and if these checks are on occasion carried out by an independent body.

Question:

86 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health if he has investigated the installation of incinerators for hospital usage which can be used to provide energy, thus saving on expensive energy bills, especially when new incinerators are being installed or new hospitals constructed; and if he will make a statement on the investigations which have been carried out by his Department in this area.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 85 and 86 together. The question of procedures for monitoring the operation of hospital incinerators is a matter for the hospital authorities concerned. Periodic checks on temperature and chemical composition of flue gases are carried out by hospital staff and in some cases by an independent body.

An investigation of the economic and technical implications of heat recovery is routinely conducted prior to the installation of new hospital incinerators. As a result of these investigations a number of hospital incinerators with heat recovery have been installed and are making a significant contribution to energy conservation.
