Vol. 398 No. 2

Written Answers. - Entrance Examinations.

Toddy O'Sullivan

Question:

44 Mr. T. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education if she will give her views on entrance examinations for secondary schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

John Bruton

Question:

110 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education the proportion of second level schools in the free education scheme which operate entry tests based on academic ability.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 44 and 110 together. The selection of pupils for admission to second level schools, and the criteria used for this purpose, are decided by the school authorities in each case. My Department have no statistical information on the matter. I have previously indicated that I would deprecate the use of tests for the purpose of "creaming" pupils of higher ability.
