Vol. 398 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Diets.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

106 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for Health, in view of the recognition of vegetarian meals as a more healthy alternative, if he will monitor the availiablity of vegan and vegetarian diets in all hospitals and residential care institutions including meals with wholegrains; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Most major hospitals and institutions either employ dietitians or have access to their advice regarding the supply of special diets to patients, including vegetarians. Current dietary guidelines on healthy eating are aimed at promoting well balanced mixed diets. My Department is currently drafting a food and health policy, which will include catering in health facilities. This policy, based on the healthy eating guidelines established by the Food Advisory Committee will be implemented in hospitals and within the community.
