Question:

23 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment the measures he will introduce to ensure that no Irish houses exceed the reference level 200 becquerels per cubic metre; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Environmental Research Unit of my Department is preparing for dissemination to householders and builders, technical guidance on remedial and preventive measures to deal with radon accumulation in houses. In addition, the approach to be taken in the case of new buildings to avoid danger to health by factors such as radon, is being examined in the context of regulations to be made under the Building Control Act, 1990.
