Vol. 399 No. 5

Written Answers. - Housing Policy.

Gerry O'Sullivan

Question:

47 Mr. G. O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment if he accepts that the basic aim of national housing policy, as set out in the most recent statement of comprehensive Public Expenditure Programmes, 1988, is still to ensure that as far as the resources of the economy permit, every household can obtain a house of good standard, located in an acceptable environment, at a price or rent they can afford; and he has satisfied himself that this basic aim is still being met; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I can confirm that the overall objective of housing policy remains as stated in the question. I am of the view that the policies being pursued by the Government are in the present circumstances best suited to the achievement of that objective. I would refer the Deputy to my statement in the House during the debate on a Private Member's motion on 13 March, 1990, Official Report, columns 2420-2434. As I indicated then it is my intention to ensure that housing policies are kept under review.
