Vol. 399 No. 10

Written Answers. - Sewage Treatment.

Roger T. Garland

Question:

126 Mr. Garland asked the Minister for the Environment if he has considered the possibility of treating Dublin's sewage using biodigestion equipment and by using the methane gas and waste produced as saleable sources of energy and as a saleable fertiliser.

Richard Bruton

Question:

128 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment the estimated capital running costs of tertiary treatment compared to a secondary treatment at the Ringsend sewage treatment plant, Dublin 4; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 126 and 128 together.

The issues in question will be addressed in the comprehensive brief, which Dublin Corporation will shortly issue to consultants, concerning the provision of secondary treatment at the Ringsend sewage treatment plant.

The consultants will not only be required to provide a detailed estimate of the capital cost of providing secondary and tertiary treatment facilities but also the likely operation and maintenance costs.

The brief also requires the consultant to examine the various methods of treating and disposing of sludge other than to the sea. This will include biodigestion and the use of bioproducts for land use or as a cost/energy saving measure.
