Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Edward Nealon

Question:

117 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Finance if he has plans for excavation work at any of the archaeological sites recently documented in County Sligo; and in particular, Knocknashee.

There are no plans to carry out archaeological excavations at any of the sites documented in County Sligo, including Knocknashee. It is the policy of the Commissioners of Public Works to carry out excavations only in cases where it is necessary to do so in the interest of conservation. Where a monument is threatened by proposed development a rescue excavation may be undertaken. A programme of research excavation is arranged annually by the Royal Irish Academy.
