Vol. 400 No. 9

Written Answers. - Free Television Licences.

Seán Barrett

Question:

156 Mr. S. Barrett asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he has any proposals to increase the allowance to those in receipt of the free television licence, to the equivalent of a colour licence, in view of the fact that it is not longer possible to obtain a new black and white television set.

Any extension of the existing free television licence scheme to provide colour set licences would have to be considered in a budgetary context. It is estimated that the cost involved would be an additional £3 million per annum.
