Vol. 403 No. 3

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Bernard Allen — the unacceptable situation in Cork where persons with medical cards and/or hospital services cards have been put on long waiting lists for necessary surgery, but are being offered almost immediate attention if they are prepared to pay substantial amounts of money; (2) Deputy Bill Cotter — the question of national security arising from the placing of a bomb at the checkpoint near the village of Roslea; and the threats to shopkeepers in the North who serve members of the Garda and Army; (3) Deputy Nuala Fennell — the plans the Minister of Health has to open up the remaining beds at Cheeverstown Hospital, in view of the 328 residential places immediately required for mentally handicapped people; (4) Deputy Emmet Stagg — the gross overcrowding in unsuitable prefabricated buildings at the CBS secondary school in Naas, despite repeated undertakings since 1985 to provide the agreed accommodation; (5) Deputy Paul Connaughton — the immediate problems facing pig producers in this country; (6) Deputy Alan Shatter — the smog in Dublin and the ineffectiveness of the Government's action; (7) Deputy Roger Garland — the serious situation regarding the smog in Dublin last night; and the inadequate performance of the Department of the Environment; (8) Deputy Eric Byrne — the deteriorating air quality in Dublin within the past two days as a result of an apparent significant rise in air pollution; and the measures the Government intend to take to deal with the problem; (9) Deputy Pat McCartan — the Darndale refurbishment scheme, with particular reference to the delay in its programme and the serious undermining of the project as a result of that delay; (10) Deputy Pat Rabbitte — the crisis in regard to the provision of services for the mentally handicapped, with specific reference to the Dublin area.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following: Deputies Paul Connaughton, Pat Rabbitte and Emmet Stagg.
