Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - TB Test.

Paul McGrath

Question:

57 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason it is necessary to order a farmer to employ a contractor to wash out his cattle pen after some of his stock have gone down in the TB test; and if his attention has been drawn to the fact that this has to be paid for before the farmer gets payment for his reactors from the Department of Agriculture and Food.

I have been informed by the director of ERAD that where bovine tuberculosis or brucellosis is identified the holding must be disinfected prior to derestriction. In order to ensure uniform and proper disinfection it was decided that the farm relief service should carry out the task on high risk herds as and from 1 August 1990 and that payment for reactors would not be made until disinfection has been completed. This measure is considered essential to combat sources of residual infection.
