Vol. 403 No. 5

Written Answers. - Ardee (Louth) School.

Michael Bell

Question:

84 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to (a) the serious situation which exists at the Ardee Community School, Ardee, County Louth in relation to the scheme for teaching of the disadvantaged and its effect on this school; (b) that the school did not receive an extra teacher to which they were entitled, but in fact lost one; and (c) the plans she has to rectify the situation; when this decision will be made; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The additional teaching posts to post-primary schools in disadvantaged areas under my Department's circular letter No. 27/90 were allocated on the basis of agreed criteria following discussions with the interested parties. Ardee Community School did not receive an allocation under this scheme. However, I would point out that the school has the services of an ex-quota guidance teacher and an ex-quota remedial teacher.

The board of management of Ardee Community School appealed to my Department for an increase in its teacher allocation for the current session. I am happy to inform the Deputy that an increased allocation is being sanctioned and the board of management have been notified accordingly.
