Vol. 403 No. 6

Written Answers. - Aid to Tanzania.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

22 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will raise with the EC Commission the case of an Irish aid project to Tanzania, which involved funding for a university health centre through the Irish agency HEDCO which had been agreed by EC Directorate General I and the Brussels based EC aid agency AEDES, and which was to be completed in 1990, and for which no money was forthcoming; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Despite a favourable initial reaction, the Commission did not select the project to which the Deputy refers under the limited budget line for hospital services. They considered it more appropriate to examine the project under the European Development Fund provided an application for funding was received from the benefitting country. I am having inquiries made about this possibility and will communicate directly with the Deputy.
