Question:

28 Proinsias De Rossa asked the Minister for Labour the number of redundancies notified to his Department this year, up to the latest date for which figures are available; the way in which this compares with the same period in 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total number of redundancies notified to my Department for the first 11 months of 1990 is 12,379. This compares with a total of 12,618 for the same period in 1989. It can be seen, therefore, that the encouraging trend in 1989, which gave the lowest annual total for a decade, has continued in 1990.
