17 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals he has to alleviate the inequitable situation that is causing great difficulties to some householders in the Dublin area where one householder is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the sewer service pipe; and if he will make a statement on the matter.
Under existing legislation, a sanitary authority is responsible for the provision and maintenance of sewers whereas householders are responsible for the service pipes connecting their premises to these sewers. I am aware that this may cause difficulties for householders and I propose to review the legislation to determine what action may be appropriate in the circumstances.
