Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Investigation into Publicans' Prices.

Michael D. Higgins

Question:

137 Mr. M. Higgins asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to widespread concern in the area of south Connemara, County Galway, at recent simultaneous price rises by publicans in the area; if he has conducted any investigation as to whether the publicans operate a price fixing cartel in the area; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Restrictive Trade Practices (Intoxicating Liquor and NonAlcoholic Beverages) Order, 1965, prohibits collusion on the part of publicans in relation to the fixing of drink prices.

The Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trade, who is independent in the performance of his functions, has responsibility for the enforcement of the order. I have drawn his attention to the matter raised by the Deputy.
